CTorrent is a lightweight command-line bittorrent client which is written in the C++. Original ctorrent’s upstream has stopped its development and now it’s kept updated with new releases/bug fixes by a new developer. It’s built as a console program and it can be even used remotely in a machine that provides outside ssh access. Other main features are:

I have a subscription with PIA, so prefer to stick with that unless other VPN services are easier to get running on a headless ubuntu server. I would also prefer to stick with 18.04 over 20.04, but not hard set on that. So, what are the best bittorrent clients and vpn's for use with a headless linux server and are there any good guides out.

Hello everyone, how are you all doing today? I hope you are all having a great weekend so far. My weekend started off crazy but I will give you all the details about that later lol, anyway read on…

Today we will highlight some of the best Bittorrent clients for Ubuntu, Linux Mint and any other Linux Distro. I decided to make this post today because for some reason, a lot of Ubuntu users simply think it is a waste of time to use Bittorrent on a Linux OS, most of them would rather just find a direct download and use wget, but I argue lets take a look at some good Bittorrent clients on Ubuntu 20.04, 19.10 and 18.04, they do exist!

Can I run BitTorrent in Ubuntu?

Yes, one more times, YES! A lot of Bittorrent software run perfectly on Ubuntu and Linux. In fact, Ubuntu actually comes with it’s own Bittorrent client called Transmission but to be honest, it’s good but not that good. That’s why I made this list, to showcase the other awesome BitTorrent clients out there and I positive you will find at least one or two Bittorrent clients with GUI that you can use as your favorite client, let’s begin.

#1. Download qBittorrent for Ubuntu

The qBittorrent project aims to provide a Free Software alternative to µtorrent. Additionally, qBittorrent runs and provides the same features on all major platforms (Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, OS/2, FreeBSD).

qBittorrent is based on Qt4 toolkit and libtorrent-rasterbar and it runs perfectly on Linux Mint and of course Ubuntu.

An advanced and multi-platform BitTorrent client with a nice Qt user interface as well as a Web UI for remote control and an integrated search engine. qBittorrent aims to meet the needs of most users while using as little CPU and memory as possible.

qBittorrent was chosen as our #1 bittorrent client above even Deluge because it is well maintained and the stability can’t be matched. But again, just to be honest, Deluge is as good as qBittorrent if not better in some areas.

#2. Download Deluge for Ubuntu

Deluge is a full-featured BitTorrent client for Linux, OS X, Unix and Windows. It uses libtorrent in its backend and features multiple user-interfaces including: GTK+, web and console. It has been designed using the client server model with a daemon process that handles all the bittorrent activity. The Deluge daemon is able to run on linux machines with the user-interfaces being able to connect remotely from any platform.

Ubuntu 20 04

Deluge features a rich plugin collection; in fact, most of Deluge’s functionality is available in the form of plugins.

Deluge was created with the intention of being lightweight and unobtrusive. It is our belief that downloading shouldn’t be the primary task on your computer and therefore shouldn’t monopolize system resources.

Deluge is not designed for any one desktop environment and will work just fine in GNOME, KDE, XFCE and others.

#3. Download Tixati For Ubuntu

Download Tixati Bittorrent Client

Tixati is a peer-to-peer file sharing program that uses the popular BitTorrent protocol. This protocol allows many peers to form a cooperative swarm and download very large files with great efficiency.

Tixati has the following features:

  • detailed views of all aspects of the swarm, including peers, pieces, files, and trackers
  • support for magnet links, so no need to download .torrent files if a simple magnet-link is available
  • super-efficient peer choking/unchoking algorithms ensure the fastest downloads
  • peer connection encryption for added security
  • full DHT (Distributed Hash Table) implementation for trackerless torrents, including detailed message traffic graphs and customizable event logging
  • advanced bandwidth charting of overall traffic and per-transfer traffic, with separate classification of protocol and file bytes, and with separate classification of outbound traffic for trading and seeding
  • highly flexible bandwidth throttling, including trading/seeding proportion adjustment and adjustable priority for individual transfers and peers
  • bitfield graphs that show the completeness of all downloaded files, what pieces other peers have available, and the health of the overall swarm
  • customizable event logging for each download, and individual event logs for all peers within the swarm
  • expert local file management functions which allow you to move files to a different partition even while downloading is still in progress
  • 100% compatible with the BitTorrent protocol
  • Windows and Linux-GTK native versions available

#5. Download Transmission for Ubuntu

Install Transmission Bittorrent Client For Ubuntu

Transmission is a cross-platform BitTorrent client that works perfectly on Ubuntu, as I said above, on the 3rd paragraph, Transmisson does come by default on Ubuntu, but in case you wish to get the latest version or if by chance your Ubuntu or Linux distro doesn’t have it installed by default, this is for you.

Ubuntu 20.04 Download

Transmission is an open source, volunteer-based project:

20.04 Ubuntu Iso

Transmission is designed for easy, powerful use. We’ve set the defaults to Just Work and it only takes a few clicks to configure advanced features like watch directories, bad peer blocklists, and the web interface. When Ubuntu chose Transmission as its default BitTorrent client, one of the most-cited reasons was its easy learning curve.

In separate benchmarks, Linux Format and Lacrocivious both found Transmission to use less CPU than any other GUI client. It even used less CPU than some non-GUI clients.

Transmission also has the lowest memory footprint of any major BitTorrent client.
